China’s example and Africa’s path forward, China’s rise to technological leadership was built on deliberate investments in education, research, and innovation. For instance, China now spends over $560 billion annually on research and development r and d, making it the second largest investor globally after the United States. Africa, by contrast, currently spends less than 1% of its GDP on R and d compared to the global average of 1.7%. Tharaka Invention Academy aims to bridge this gap by equipping students with the skills and knowledge to contribute to Africa’s r and d efforts, particularly in areas critical to the continent’s development, such as agriculture, renewable energy, and healthcare, empowering youth through education.
The role of Tharaka Invention Academy in fostering a culture of innovation cannot be overstated with a focus on science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Currently, only about 13% of students in Sub-Saharan Africa are enrolled in steam fields compared to 33% in China. By offering courses that blend theory with practical application, the Academy is preparing students to tackle real world challenges and drive technological advancement in Africa, harnessing local resources. Africa is home to 30% of the world’s minimal reserves, including critical resources like cobalt and lithium essential for the global tech industry. However, these resources have historically been exported with little value added within the continent. Invention Circle, CBO advocates for a new approach, one where these resources are harnessed to develop local industries, creating jobs, and fostering economic independence. For example, Africa holds 60% of the world’s cobalt, a key component in electric vehicle batteries. By developing local expertise and battery technology, Africa can position itself as a global leader in this burgeoning industry, A United vision for progress.
Africa’s future depends on its ability to unite around a shared vision of progress. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 outlines a strategic framework for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse of the future. Tho Invention Academy and tho invention Circle, CBO, align with this vision by promoting Pan-African collaboration and innovation and invention. Currently, intra African trade accounts for only 17% of total African exports compared to 59% in Asia and 69% in Europe. By fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, these institutions can help increase intra African trade driving economic growth across the continent. The economic impact of innovation, the economic impact of innovation is profound. A study by the World Economic Forum found that a 10% increase in innovation capacity could lead to a 0.5% increase in GDP growth for Africa. This could translate into millions of new jobs and billions in additional economic output. The continent’s share of global exports is currently just 3%, but with strategic investments in innovation and technology, Africa could significantly increase its global economic footprint. This figure reflects the continent’s limited integration into the global economy, largely exporting raw materials and having a very small presence in value added goods and services.
